An analysis of the gas composition of exhaled air in the differential diagnosis of chronic tonsillitis

Abstract

Background: determine differences in gas composition of exhaled breath in patients with chronic tonsillitis of compensated and decompensated forms using the array of metal oxide gas sensors. Methods: 105 patients with chronic tonsillitis and 27 patients without inflammatory diseases of the upper respiratory tract. Samples of exhaled air were analyzed using the apparatus «Multisens-5» (E-nose). Result: It was shown significant difference (p<0.05) in the structure of the volatile organic compounds of the exhaled air among patients with chronic tonsillitis of compensated and decompensated forms. Conclusion: Multi-sensor analysis is applicable for differential diagnosis of chronic tonsillitis due to its rapid, simple, and noninvasive nature.
